Lupus is an autoimmune disease that impacts nearly 1.5 million Americans. About 90% of people with lupus are women. Lupus is a chronic condition that impacts many different organs, causing widespread symptoms. This can make it hard to be properly diagnosed. In fact, some doctors call lupus âThe Great Imitatorâ because it is so often confused with conditions such as thyroid disorders, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, Lyme disease and other autoimmune disorders.
There are two kinds of lupus that cause different sets of lupus symptoms: discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). DLE mainly affects skin and is usually triggered by exposure to sunlight that causes skin lesions. But DLE usually doesnât damage internal organs or glands. Systemic lupus, on the other hand, affects the entire body and is more serious. A third variation of this disease is known as drug-induced lupus (DILE).
At the Holistic Wellness Center, we take a âwhole bodyâ approach to managing lupus. We know that factors such as genetics, stress, inflammation, and hormonal changes or imbalances (such as during or after pregnancy or menopause) are major contributing factors. Because lupus impacts so many different organs, we also focus on repairing the bodyâs various systems (such as the gut and kidneys) and balancing the immune system (to minimize the risk of developing further autoimmune conditions).
Symptoms:
- Extreme fatigue
- Recurring fever
- Muscle and joint pain
- Poor blood circulation
- Neuropathy
- Skin rashes
- Anemia
- Digestive issues
- Insomnia
- Respiratory and heart troubles
